Small businesses are a key growth driver of the US economy, and women are increasingly playing a large role in the country’s startup ecosystem.

According to recent data from US Census Bureau, women-owned companies now represent more than one-fifth of businesses with employees in the US, a number that has tended to increase in recent years. These businesses report annual sales of more than $1.8 trillion and employ nearly 11 million workers.

While women-owned businesses are becoming a more important part of the economy, Census Bureau data also shows that women’s business experiences often differ from men’s. Notably, industries women tend to start businesses in different from those most popular for men.

In particular, sectors such as health care and social assistance or accommodation and food services tend to have a higher proportion of women-owned businesses. And partly because of these industry differences, women-owned businesses tend to pay wages per employee that are lower (30.1% lower) than the national average.

However, these differences also lead to women’s primary reasons for entering business. Women are more likely than men to think that flexible hours or a balance between work and family obligations is important when deciding to start a business.

Meanwhile, men often said that their ability to earn a higher income or want to be their own boss motivated their decision to start a business.

To identify the locations with the most female business owners, researchers at BackgroundChecks.org looked at data from the US Census Bureau Annual Business Survey and calculate the percentage of businesses owned by women.
