LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – A 15-year-old girl has been arrested on suspicion of killing her father, and her 16-year-old boyfriend is accused of aiding.
At about 4 p.m. Monday, Lincoln Police responded to The Lodge Apartments, southeast of 40th and Highway 2, after 15-year-old Sallie Gilmer called 911 to say she came home from school to find her father stabbed.
Officers discovered 70-year-old Jesse Gilmer had been stabbed to death.
After conducting interviews and gathering evidence, Sallie Gilmer was arrested for first-degree murder and use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony. Her boyfriend, Isaac Honigschmidt, was arrested for aiding and abetting first degree murder. They are deposited at the Lancaster County Youth Service Center.
Lincoln Police Chief Teresa Ewins said they will be tried as adults due to the nature of the crimes.
This murder marks the 10th homicide in Lincoln this year. This is a 122% increase from the five-year average and a 25% increase from the trend over the past two years alone, but Sheriff Ewins insists Lincolns are not in danger.
“We can’t just ignore what happened, but what I keep telling you as we look at these cases is whether it was random or pre-event interaction,” said Director Ewins. speak. “Every case we come up with is not random.”
Ewins said violent crime continues to fall from the previous year’s average. Robbery is down 20% and serious assaults down 21%.
“I feel very comfortable living in Lincoln,” Ewins said. “This is a very safe community and our officers are doing the best they can.”
Ewins said the sheer number of investigations, including five homicides in September alone, and the fatal car crash investigators responded to is taking a toll on a fragile division.
