6-year-old severely burned in Lakewood car fire trying to protect brother from fire

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – A massive car fire in Lakewood left a 6-year-old child with severe burns.

Dean Martin is recovering at Metro Health in Cleveland. He suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns on his face, arms and legs. Martin’s mother says he worked to shield her 4-year-old brother Elijah while her car caught fire.

“He said I was Spider-Man’s mother. I saved my brother. That was the first thing he told me when we got here and he woke up after taking the medication,” says Iesha Newson.

Newson’s car was in a parking lot in Lakewood around 5pm. She ran into the store to get her prescription. She left her two sons in the car. She said it was something she would forever regret.

“I got out, my car was on fire.”

A few good Samaritans helped Elijah get out first. He tells everyone Dean is still in the car.

“They went back to find Dean, as soon as they pulled the dean out of the car. It exploded.”

Dean wears a new hat. He is not only a brother and a son, but a superhero to everyone.

“I would never have thought that he would put his brother in a crate and stand in front of him so he wouldn’t get burned. That’s very selfless for a 6-year-old.”

Newson says she learned a lot from this heartbreaking experience. She will always share her story with the world.

“The most important thing I learned from all this is not to leave my baby unattended for even three minutes because in three minutes you never know what could happen. “.

Newson just bought her car two months ago. When she went into the store, she took her key. It is not yet clear what led to the fire.
