ACC Commissioner Ready to Extend March Madness

“It’s the crown jewel of all our championships,” ACC commissioner Jim Phillips recently said. ESPN’s Jeff Borzello related to the March Madness of college basketball.

What started as a conversation about possibly expanding the College Rugby Round as soon as 2024 quickly turned into a conversation about expanding other areas of college athletics. Getting more schools into the “dance” for both boys and girls is something Phillips is opening.

“Time to look at it,” he told ESPN. “It’s the crown jewel of all our championships. Nothing really replicates it, on both sides, the men’s side and the women’s side. So you also have to be respectful not to mess it up. bounce, and understand it’s where it’s really good, healthy, but you also have to keep making progress, and I try to think of those things that way.

“I believe [automatic qualifiers] and winning the championship is the problem. It will be important. I don’t care about AQ drop. I just don’t. But I’m also committed to making sure those who deserve it go to a tournament. … You’re trying to balance access across Division I. Make sure the AQs are still there for conferences. They need that. They need the financial part, they need the emotional part, be a part of it, etc. But you also have a team at the top level clamoring for more access to their team. That just leads to discussion, we need to have an overview and assessment of college basketball and the league. “

There’s something to be said about not changing something that isn’t broken. After all, the first weekend of March Madness essentially shut down office buildings across America. How many “sick days” are there to watch the opening half?

However, Phillips sees the expansion of NCAA basketball tournaments as an opportunity to bring in more opportunities, invite a few more Cinderellas to prom.

“More access, more opportunities for more young men and women,” he said. “There’s a lot of upside to that.”

More March Madness? That would be hard to argue against.
