Ada area murder suspect calls for ‘Bigfoot’ defense –
ADA, Okla. (KTEN) – A suspect is under arrest in connection with a strange murder over the weekend in Pontotoc County.
The incident happened on Saturday afternoon just outside the city limits of Ada. Deputies said Larry Doil Sanders, 53, admitted to a family member that he killed his friend Jimmy Knighten along the Southern Canada River.
Sheriff John Christian said of Sanders: “He seems to be under the influence of something. “His claim was that Mr. Knighten summoned ‘Bigfoot’ to come and kill him; that’s why he had to kill Mr. Knighten.”
“Sanders and Knighten were strolling in the river on Saturday when a confrontation ensued,” according to a statement from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. “Sanders reported that Knighten attacked and strangled.”
Search agencies and the Pontotoc County Sheriff’s Department were unable to locate the victim’s body until Sunday afternoon. Investigators are currently working to uncover the details of the crime.
“It always makes it easier,” says Christian. “You still have to prove all elements of the crime, and what the suspect tells you is really what happened.”
OSBI agents charged Sanders with first-degree murder.
