Age of characters in ‘House of the Dragon’

Small spoiled things up front.

Watch a complex series like Dragon’s House can be understood as asking a lot of questions, such as, why is there Rhaenys and a Rhaenyra in the same family? or, Where is The Vale again? or, Who are these other guys on the Little Council? And then second series and the third day episodes, you may especially find yourself wondering, How old are people here?

That’s a fair query, considering episode 2, the adult King Viserys Targaryen announces plans to marry Alicent Hightower, who doesn’t appear to be any older than his teenage daughter. Before that, Viserys’s court even pressured him to marry 12-year-old Laena Velaryon for political purposes (yes!), but he ultimately refused. By episode 3, Alicent is pregnant with her and Viserys’ second child, while his daughter is attracting her older suitors. Yes, this is a fantasy series based on the Middle Ages, when the lifespan was about 30 years and most people were betrothed in their teens; However, such an odd pairing in 2022 might leave you in awe.

Not all ages of Dragon’s House characters are fully revealed in the show (so far). To add to the confusion, actors are not necessarily the same age as their on-screen colleagues, and there are many time jumps in just the first few episodes. How does one follow?

Luckily we can see George RR Martin’s book Fire & Bloodbase for the series, for a little guidance. However, keep in mind that some details may have been changed for the screen adaptation, currently airing weekly on HBO. What we do know is Dragon began in 101, when King Jaehaerys announced his nephew Viserys as his heir. The timeline then shifts to the ninth year of King Viserys’ reign, and then forwards half a year after Queen Aemma’s death, and then three years to Aegon II’s second baby. birthday name day. Here, we try to find out how the characters are aging.

Alicent Hightower: Based on Fire & BloodAlicent, born some 88 years after Aegon’s Conquest (AC), arrived at King’s Landing when she was 13 years old to accompany her father, Otto, Hand of the King. She was 17 when Queen Aemma died and 18 when she became Viserys’ second wife. She is 9 years older than Princess Rhaenyra in the books, but seems closer in age to her in the TV series. Emily Carey, the actress who plays the young Alicent, is 19 years old.

Rhaenyra Targaryen: In episode 2, Viserys states that his daughter Rhaenyra is 15 years old. Then, after a time jump in episode 3, he mentions she’s now 17 (and “old enough” to get married). This marks a significant change from the book, which states that Rhaenyra was born in 97 AC, and will be only nine years old when her father marries Alicent. Milly Alcock, who plays young Rhaenyra, is 22 years old.

Viserys Targaryen: In the book, Viserys, born in 77 AC, married 18-year-old Alicent just before he turned 30. They are 11 years apart. He appears to have aged in the screen adaptation, as Paddy Considine, who plays Viserys in the series, is 49. But Viserys’ exact age is yet to be confirmed on screen.

Otto Hightower: In the book, Alicent’s father, born about 76 AC, must be a year older than Viserys. That means he was about 25 years old at the time Viserys was designated as heir, and 30 years old when Alicent and Viserys were married. Otto’s age is also unconfirmed on-screen, but Rhys Ifans, Notting Hill and Amazing Spider-Man the star who plays him is 55 years old.

Daemon Targaryen: Born in 81 AC, Daemon is believed to be four years younger than Viserys, chronologically in Fire & Blood. Matt Smith, who plays Daemon, is 39 years old.

Laena Velaryon: Her latest appearance in Dragon is in episode 2 where she is 12 years old (played by Nova Fouellis-Mosé). Laena does not appear in episode 3, but is expected to return as a teenager and then as an adult later in the series, played by actresses Savannah Steyn and Nanna Blondell, respectively.

Laenor Velaryon: The eldest son of Corlys and Rhaenys, and brother of Laena, could become Rhaenyra’s groom. (They got married in Fire & Blood.) In the book, he is only three years older than the princess. If that’s the case on the show, he’ll be around 20 when we see him fight in the Ladder in episode 3.

Corlys Velaryon: Born in 53 AC in the book, the famous Sea Serpent was said to be 48 when Jaehaerys named an heir. Actor Steve Toussaint somehow looks younger at 57.

Rhaenys Targaryen: Born 74 AC at Fire & BloodPrincess Rhaenys was 27 years old when Jaehaerys transferred her as heir and named the next Viserys to the throne instead. Eve Best, who plays “The Queen Who Never Was,” is regal at age 51.

Ser Criston Cole: According to Martin’s The world of ice and fireSer Criston is born in 81 AC, making him 16 years older than Rhaenyra. Fabien Frankel, who plays the knight on screen, is 28 years old.

Jason Lannister: Jason is believe born between 89 and 97 AC, which means he would be anywhere from eight to the same age as Rhaenyra. Jefferson Hall, who plays Jason, is 44 years old.

Aegon II Targaryen: Viserys and Alicent’s son was two years old when he was first introduced in episode 3. We had a feeling he would grow up rapidly before our eyes over the course of the season.
