American Woman Faked Kidnapping to Bleed Parents For Cash, Say Cops


The daughter of a former US Army officer has been arrested in India for allegedly forging her own kidnapping in an elaborate scheme to blackmail her parents, According to the police in India.

Chloe Mclaughlin, 27, was arrested by the New Delhi district police on Sunday after discovering she was living with a boyfriend she met online.

Police said they unraveled the plan after her mother contacted the US embassy when she received a “grief call” in which Mclaughlin reported she was being assaulted and living in a “unsafe environment”. the Indian Express report.

Mclaughlin contacted her parents on July 10 in a video call via WhatsApp. A man entered the room and the call was disconnected, her mother told the US embassy, ​​then contacted local authorities after concluding the woman was being held against her will.

Embassy officials used information from an email she had previously sent about renewing her passport to try to locate her, leading them to the Radisson Blu Hotel. According to Amrutha Guguloth, Deputy Commissioner of Police in New Delhi, police raided the hotel to discover that the woman had never been a guest there – she was simply using the free Wi-Fi. of the hotel. “In order to determine the girl’s current whereabouts, assistance was sought from Yahoo.com for providing the IP address she used to send emails to US Citizen Services on July 9,,” he told reporters. “Furthermore, the Immigration Department was asked to provide her immigration form in order to find her whereabouts.”

Police, working with the US embassy then traced the young girl’s IP address from the video. They discovered she was with Okoroafor Chibuike Okoro, 31, a Nigerian national, whom she had met online and whom she had hooked up in early May because of a shared love of music.

As police tried to arrest Okoro, McLaughlin confessed to orchestrating the kidnapping after running out of money. Both now face charges of overstaying in India without valid passports and visas. Police said no other charges will be filed in India. “After rescuing her, it was revealed that she had staged the incident to blackmail her parents,” police said.
