Asylum-seeker dies by suicide in New York City shelter

NEWYORK — An asylum-seeker mother died by suicide in a shelter in New York City.

Mayor Eric Adams said her death was a reminder of the duty to help those in need.

“Our hearts are broken for this young woman and any loved ones she has, and we, as a city, mourn her,” he said in a statement. “This tragedy is a reminder that we have an obligation to do everything in our power to help those in need.”

Adams says mental health services are available at Asylum seekers resource navigation center.

This happened after CBS2 learned the mayor was consider using cruise ships as temporary housing for new arrivals of migrants.

He Suggestions shared with our Political Correspondent Marcia Kramer on her show, “The Point.” But for now, the idea is receiving resistance from some advocates.

“We want to make sure people have access to transportation, their kids can go to school, and if they’re allowed to work, they can go to work. And all of that is going to be difficult. much more if people were sheltered literate on the fringes of the city,” said Jacquelyn Simone, policy director for the Coalition of the Homeless.

In recent months, the city has seen an increase of more than 11,000 migrants.
