Baby girl surrenders safely in Mooresville Safe Haven Baby Box


MOORESVILLE – A healthy baby girl was safely surrendered in a Safe Haven Baby Box in Mooresville this week.

The box located at the Mooresville Fire Department on 144 East State Street is the 39th box installed by the organization in the United States.

Safe Haven Baby Boxes founded by Monica Kelsey says babies were lifted out of the box by medical professionals within a minute of being placed in the box.

Kelsey and the Mooresville Fire Department held a media conference Friday afternoon to share news and updates about the newborn. She said she organizes these press conferences as an avenue to let mothers know that they have made the right choice and that their babies are safe.

“We want you to know, your baby is healthy, your baby is safe, and we got that from here,” Kelsey said.

The baby to surrender in Mooresville is the sixth baby to surrender inside a baby box this year and the fifth in Indiana.

“The Mooresville Fire Department is here to protect property and save lives. With this box, this gives our department another tool to do just that,” said Mooresville Fire Chief Matt Dalton. said at a press conference on Friday.

Kelsey, who was abandoned as a child, has dedicated her life to helping mothers in crisis and giving them a safe, anonymous way to surrender her child without fear of abuse or judgment. review.

Since the first Safe Haven Baby box was installed in Indiana, 20 babies have been safely placed in the box. Nationwide, the organization assisted 117 people to safe surrender following calls to the Safe Haven Baby Box Hotline.

What is a Baby Safe Haven Box?

The baby box is a safe incubator with an alarm system, so 911 will be notified as soon as the baby is placed inside. The children’s boxes also feature heating and cooling.

After first responders collect the infants, they will be taken to the nearest medical facility for evaluation.

Infants surrendered under Indiana’s Safe Haven Law are placed in custody by the state Department of Children’s Services after they are discharged from the hospital. Then the process begins to find an adoptive family within 30-45 days.

The boxes make the news, but the Safe Haven Hotline is where most of this journey begins.

SHBB has a 24-hour Safe Haven hotline (1-866-99BABY1), so parents can talk to trained professionals and get more information about surrender options or how to get help. help them take care of their children.

The SHBB hotline is staffed with licensed counselors.

Safe Haven law allows mothers to safely transfer their babies, anonymously, up to 30 days old

Under the Safe Haven Law, parents have up to 30 days to change their mind after delivering an infant.
