(Reuters) – Brazilian workers at Mercedes-Benz will go on strike next week, their union said on Thursday, after the company’s Brazilian branch announced plans to lay off 3,600 employees.

The union Sindicato dos Metalurgicos do Grande ABC said in a statement that workers will go on strike from September 12 after the company said it would lay off 3,600 workers and outsource operations at its truck chassis and bus in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo.

“Many times in a negotiation process, not everything the union wants will prevail, but not everything the company wants,” said union president Moises Selerges.

He said that until last week the company was still hiring, which would make the layoffs “unreasonable” and “unreasonable”.
