British professor Tom Marsh goes missing on research trip to Chile | World News

Police say a British professor has gone missing while on a research trip to Chile.

Tom Marsh, 60, from Rugby of Warwickshire, visited La Silla Observatory on the outskirts of Chile’s Atacama desert, about 370 miles (595km) north of the capital Santiago.

He hasn’t heard from him since Friday night, September 16.

Police described him as Caucasian, about 6ft 3in tall, bald, with gray hair and beard.

He will probably wear a blue raincoat, walking boots, and a gray beanie.

Professor Marsh works in the Department of Physics at the University of Warwick, where he is interested in binary stars.

In a statement through Warwickshire Police, his family said: “We are deeply concerned for Tom and miss him, and will ask anyone with information about his whereabouts to kindly assist. .”

In a social media post, his daughter Tabitha said the family was “desperate” to find him, adding: “He was out observing at La Silla Observatory in Chile when he went missing.

“The nearest town is La Serena. If anyone has any information or thinks they can help in any way, please contact the police… Thanks.

“My family, my dad’s friends and colleagues, would be extremely grateful for any help or information.”

Warwickshire Police said its officers were in contact with the Office of Foreign Development and Commonwealth and Interpol, as well as Chilean authorities.
