A British woman has died after being trapped in an avalanche in the French Alps.

The 45-year-old was hiking with two others when the accident happened on the Argentiere Glacier on Mont Blanc on Saturday.

French police said a professional alpine search and rescue unit in Chamonix was informed of the incident by a guide around 5 p.m., and sent rescuers and doctors on duty. promoted.

Colonel Bertrand Host, of the mountain rescue unit, said that despite their efforts, they could not save the woman.

“When we got there we had to rescue this person but she was in a bad condition and we evacuated her from the valley,” he said. “She was taken over by rescuers and two dogs but we were unable to revive her.”

The Chamonix coroner opened an investigation into the woman’s death and ordered an autopsy.

Colonel Host said deaths on the Mont Blanc massif are not uncommon, with about 80 people dying each year.

The local prosecutor’s office said the woman and her partner were traveling with an alpine guide and were going up the Col du Tour Noir when the avalanche struck.

The office confirmed an avalanche risk of level three – on a five-point scale – on Saturday.
