Broward County Humane Society Transports Rescue Animals From Puerto Rico Shelter – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

DA NANG BEACH, DA NANG SAND. (WSVN) – As Puerto Ricans deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Fiona, animals left behind inside a flooded animal shelter have been transported to adoption centers in the US to be handed over. give them new permanent homes.

Dozens of pets were unloaded from a cargo plane and taken to the Broward County Humane Society, around 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Twenty dogs and 10 cats made the short trip from Puerto Rico to Miami International Airport and settled in their kennels at the rescue shelter located at Dania Beach.

The animals come from an organization the Humane Society works with called Save A Sato, located in San Juan; shelters don’t have electricity, that’s why they were shipped to South Florida.

Broward County Humane Society officials said they needed to get the animals out of that shelter.

“Unfortunately, they lost power due to Hurricane Fiona,” said Cherie Wachter of Broward County Humane Society. “They don’t have running water, and by taking some of these animals, it helps to reduce their strength and create more room for shelter.”

The Save A Sato shelter can now accommodate more animals displaced by the storm.

“We understand that people have found the animals and brought them to the facility, so this is just one of many flights we expect to help over the next few weeks,” said Wachter.

Health checks and cleanings will be performed on these furry creatures before they are introduced up for adoption this weekend.
