At least 25 wedding partygoers were killed after a bus plunged into a gorge after leaving a road in northern India.

Police told the Press Trust of India news agency there were between 45 and 50 people on the bus when it fell into a ravine in Pauri district, Uttarakhand state on Tuesday evening.

State police and disaster response force worked together with locals to rescue 21 people at the crash site, police chief Ashok Kumar tweeted.

Vijay Kumar Jogdande, a senior government official, said they will conduct an investigation into the incident and will conduct an autopsy after the bodies are recovered from the scene.

Officials were seen clearing an area of ​​bushes and trees to assist in the rescue operation as they pulled an injured person up.

Rescuers also retrieved a dead body by rope, before they were carried away on a stretcher.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said all possible assistance would be given to those affected.

“In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with the bereaved family. I hope the injured recover soonest,” he tweeted.

Deadly road accidents are common in India due to reckless driving, poorly maintained roads and aging vehicles.

According to the police, more than 110,000 people are killed each year in road accidents across India.
