It’s certainly no shock to learn the Colorado Springs gunman had a terrible home life. We are talking about a 22-year-old man who walks into a nightclub with a rifle and kills 5 strangers. But this is… something completely different.
Days after the horrific mass shooting at LGBTQ friendly Q Club, CBS8 out of San Diego to track down the shooter’s father, who lives there — and hasn’t seen his son in years. The excerpts from his interview are… shocking to say the least.

First of all, we learned the man was a porn star. He is also above A&E reality show Involvement for meth addiction. The amazing thing is that he didn’t even know his son was alive until a few months before the shooting happened. He explained that the mother told him in 2016 that their son had died by suicide:
“I thought he was dead. I mourned his loss. I went through a crisis and thought I had lost my son.”
This may have been to protect their son – who was a minor at the time – from he. He explained that they tried to distance themselves as much as possible because of his past:
“His mother told me he changed his name because I was in Involvement and I used to be a porn actor.”
That may be true, but there could be another reason for the name change. Late Tuesday night, the shooter’s attorney also mentioned that they weren’t binary – and went by the pronoun they/they. That alone was probably reason enough to create a barrier between father and son. Of course, if you know. Every Daily Beastthe shooter’s mother was apparently unaware of the non-binary identity, because in a text message from the day of the shooting, the mother alludes to the shooter by the pronoun he/he.
In both cases, what followed in the father’s interview was probably the most homophobic thing we’ve ever heard. It’s extremely unsettling, but it’s the important context…
On Sunday, the father received a call about the shooting – about the worst call a parent can imagine receiving. His reaction was terrible. He told the store:
“They started telling me about the shooting that involved multiple people. And then I kept finding out it was a gay bar. I said, ‘God, is he gay?’ I was scared: ‘S**t, is he gay?’ And he’s not gay, so I said, ‘Phew!’”
We’re sorry. You find out your son has killed many innocent people in a mass shooting, and your biggest worry is the possibility that they are gay?!?
JFC, everyone. Do you see what we’re dealing with? This is also the kind of crazy, irrational, overwhelming hatred that drives people to commit acts of violence against the LGBTQ community. Value this preoccupation with sexual preferences over actual human life. It’s homophobia, folks. That is an obsession. That is hate. F**k. And yes, that kind of hate can be internalized! Daily Beast also reported that neighbors and old friends of the shooter often heard them use anti-gay terms, so…

This man actually stopped talking about his son’s serial killer to assure viewers that they weren’t gay:
“You know Mormons aren’t gay. We are not gay. There are no homosexuals in the Mormon church. We are not gay.”
The gunman was previously confirmed to be a member of the LDS Church, but does not appear to be a practitioner. Not a problem, obviously. The problem is that this father’s homophobia is stronger than his sympathy for the victims or even concern for his own son’s actions.
After assured that his son is not gay, he can handle the news of the shooting. He takes the brave stance that mass shootings are wrong:
“There is no reason to go and kill people. If you’re killing people, then something’s wrong. That is not the answer.”
Such great advice from father of the year, thanks.
