Director Arkane Pitched Thief 4, Blade Runner Game and Michael Mann Heat-Inspired Game

Harvey Smith is best known for his work on Arkane’s Dishonored series, but he’s now revealed the trilogy of games he featured were never in development.

Talking to NMESmith said at one point he introduced a Blade Runner game, a fourth entry in the Thief franchise, and a role-playing simulation inspired by the 1995 crime film Heat.

Smith is clearly a fan of the role-playing sim genre, which is a big part of most Arkane games. So it’s no surprise that the games the designer promotes are largely under that umbrella. The Thief series is one of the prime examples of the role-playing sim genre, and it finally got its fourth entry with 2014’s Thief developed by Eidos-Montreal.

While the interview doesn’t share many details about the Blade Runner field, arguably the most interesting pitch is the Heat role-playing sim. Heat is directed by Michael Mann and stars Robert De Niro, a master criminal who plans one last major heist before retiring. According to Smith, this game will have “immersive sim value.”

Instead, Smith continued working on BlackSite: Area 51, before moving on to Arkane.

While these three games never saw the light of day, Smith has forged a very fine game development career, taking on the role of Creative Director for the Dishonored and upcoming Arkane Redfall series. During the interview, Smith also said Dishonored started as a concept for a ninja game, and when Smith joined the picture, Bethesda approved of his wish to move away from the ninja premise.
