Hugh Grant there is at least one person supporting him amid the backlash over his awkward AF interview with Ashley Graham!
For those who don’t know, the Notting Hill the star had a scary interview with the 35-year-old model in ABC‘S Oscar premiere on Sunday. Hugh gives a few curt answers to her questions, essentially giving her very little work, and then he rolls his eyes at Ashley when their conversation is over!
Although many people believe that the 62-year-old actor is rude to Ashley, his longtime friend and former lover. Music and lyrics costar Drew Barrymore think of it as Hugh as his classic “gruntled” self. While talking about how Hugh said “she sings horrible” in a video interview for WIRED’s autocomplete interview, the 48-year-old actress defended him during the interview on the red carpet. She said on the sixth episode of The Drew Barrymore Show:
“If you know Hugh, that’s how he loves you. It’s also funny because having this happen to him and Ashley Graham on the red carpet and people are like, ‘Oh, he’s such a tough guy and she’s so amazing,’ and I’m like, ‘No, That’s Hugh Grant.’”

The Never Been Kissed the star continued:
“You think you’re getting this glamorous movie star and what you’re really getting is grumpy Hugh. And then you have a crush on the grumpy Hugh. When he said that, I’m telling you, he was totally funny. He didn’t mean anything negative about it. The person Ashley Graham met on that rug was the real Hugh.”
Yeah… We don’t know if that’s a good thing or not. Drew later notes that it took her even a “second” to get used to Hugh’s personality and behavior before falling in love with him:
“Probably like Ashley Graham on the carpet, like, ‘Who am I dealing with?’ And then I was like, oh, no, I love you. I want to love you. I won’t let you love me. When I got to know him, I was like I love you. I love you for who you really are. He is a funny, kind person.”
While he may be a “nice guy,” that doesn’t mean he doesn’t act rude to Ashley. Just say! But the mother-of-three doesn’t seem to let his bad attitude bother her for the moment! You can watch her full discussion of Hugh and Ashley’s situation (below):
