NEW DELHI: More than 6,500 faculty positions are vacant in central universities across the country, most of them at Delhi University, followed by Allahabad University, Banaras Hindu University and Islamic University Aligarh Church, according to the Ministry of Education (MoE) statistics.
Data has been shared by Subhas SarkarFederal Minister of Education, to answer a written question in Lok Sabha in Monday.
According to the MoE, a total of 6,549 faculty positions are vacant in the central universities.
Delhi University has the maximum number of vacancies (900), followed by Allahabad University (622), Banaras Hindu University (532), Aligarh Islamic University (498) and Jawaharlal Nehru University (326).
“The emergence of vacancies and the filling of those positions is an ongoing process. Vacancies arise due to retirement, resignation and additional requirements as a result of increased student power. Institutions are taking various measures to address the shortage of faculty to ensure that student research is covered by Sarkar.
“The Ministry of Education has requested all central higher education institutions to fill the vacant positions according to the mission method within a period of one year starting from September 5, 2021,” he added.
The minister added that since August 2021, 4,807 positions in central universities have been advertised to carry out the selection processes.
About 13 central universities in the country, including Jamia Millia Islamia (223), Tripura University (146), University of Central Kashmir (116), Central University of Haryana (120), Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University (231), have more than 100 vacant teaching positions.
