DULUTH, MN. (KBJR 6) – A thrilling, exciting and very historic weekend, thanks to a variety of planes.
Duluth Airshow returns with 15 soaring action through the skies, including a North American B-25 Mitchell, a historic World War II aircraft.
“It doesn’t do area bombing, it’s designed for other missions and is constantly being adapted for missions,” said Mitch Bertrang, Mission Coordinator in the Minnesota Wing of the Commemoration Air Force. service throughout the war.
They help preserve and restore historic fighters, allowing them to teach people about the nation’s history.
“Our mission is to educate, inspire and celebrate,” says Bertrang. “To help the next generation understand what previous generations have done for us and the freedoms we have today.”
From World War II-era planes to modern planes, Duluth Airshow features some of the best in aviation.
Major Kyle Oliver flies the No.5 F-16 jet for the US Air Force Thunderbirds, who are returning to the Air Show after their last performance in 2018.
Fans love to perform moves across the sky.
“What you’ll see from Thunderbirds 5 & 6, we’re solo, we’re going to show you how capable the plane is, so we’re going to show you it can fly low how fast it can fly, how tight it can turn,” said Oliver.
A flashy show for the crowd, but Oliver explains at the end of the day, it inspires camaraderie.
“We are all here to be a beacon of excellence, and we are here to rally those around us as a beacon of excellence to serve something great. than ourselves, and I think that’s a common trait,” says Oliver.
This year’s Duluth Air Show will feature three female pilots, Thunderbird #3 Major Lauren Schhering, F-35 Major Kristin Wolfe and civilian pilot Jessy Panzer.
The Airshow takes place on Saturday and Sunday.
