Former NBA basketball player Dwyane Wade has always stood behind her 15-year-old daughter Zaya and continues to be an ally and one of the biggest supporters of her identity. The father of four filed a lawsuit in court on Thursday morning asking his transgender daughter to officially change her name. According to Spectrum News, Dwyane is petitioning for her daughter to be allowed to permanently change her name from Zion Malachi Airamis Wade to Zaya Malachi Airamis Wade.
In addition, The Blast reports in the filing, Dwyane also asked the court to issue an ordinance to legally recognize that the gender of minors is changed to “female.” It specifically cites the reason for the change as “to conform to gender identity.” The lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court claims that he has full authority to make decisions on behalf of his daughter. Additionally, he informed his ex-wife and daughter’s mother, Siohvaughn Funches, of legal action. Zaya has been very vocal about how she identifies. Yahoo! It is reported that during a previous appearance on ‘The Ellen Show’ in 2020, Dwyane shared that Zaya has started using the pronoun she/she.
He recounted that Zaya was 12 years old; She went home and told her family that she wanted to talk. She then asks to be called Zaya instead of Zion. “We’re just trying to get as much information as possible to make sure we’re giving our baby the best chance to be his best self,” Dwyane told Ellen.
With the world watching Zaya grow up and go on to become his own, Dwyane supports his child, even though he fears for the safety of her life. In June, he attended the TIME100 Summit and told CNN, “It’s so lucky for my daughter to have parents who can support her, I still get scared every time she leaves the house.” He added, “And not just because of the gun violence, but because of the way people perceive her in this world.”
