Elon Musk says Tesla might ‘open source more code’ to other automakers
Elon Musk suggested Thursday in one Twitter Space with Ford CEO Jim Farley that Tesla could open up some of its car operating system code to other automakers.
“In the same way that Android can be useful to the phone industry as a common standard, in the same way we have the ability to open source more code,” Musk said. If Tesla makes that leap, it will compete with Google, which has developed an Android-based car operating system, as well as Apple.

Google provides car manufacturers Android car OS, modeled after the open source mobile operating system running on Linux and modified for use in cars. Apple also jumped into the OS game last June when it announced that is CarPlay Next Generation intended to power the entire instrument cluster of the vehicle. Both tech companies also offer a middleware product called Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to connect a user’s phone to the car’s infotainment system.
