FIFA 23: Sam Kerr becomes the world’s first female cover star of the series
Australian footballer Sam Kerr will be the first female athlete to get an international FIFA cover after EA announced that she will appear on the Ultimate Edition of FIFA 23, alongside France’s Kylian Mbappé.
The Chelsea forward will also be the only star on the standard version of the game in his home country Australia, as well as New Zealand – that cover will also be available as an Amazon exclusive worldwide. Paris Saint-Germain star Mbappé will appear on the standard edition in other territories.
Kerr said: “It is an honor and a dream come true to be on the cover of FIFA 23. “It has been incredible working with Kylian and the entire EA SPORTS team, and I can’t wait to see the fans. get a copy of the game.”
Female athletes had previously only appeared on regional editions of FIFA 16, when EA launched a contest that allowed fans to decide which player would join Lionel Messi on the cover. Alex Morgan was voted US star, Christine Sinclair appeared on the cover of Canada, and Stephanie Catley appeared on the cover of Australia.
Mbappe, who will be on the cover for the third year in a row, also paid homage to the historic moment, saying “I’m even more delighted to share a cover honoring women’s football with a great player like Sam Kerr.”
The 28-year-old is the captain of the Australian national team and the all-time top scorer in the US Women’s National Soccer League. Kerr has also won seven Golden Boots and is the only female player to have won this award in three different tournaments and three different continents.
FIFA 23 will be the last game in the franchise as EA and the governing body of football end their partnership in May 2022. The series will be renamed EA Sports FC but don’t change the way of playing wisely, while FIFA is now looking to create its own franchise.
