First female monkeypox case reported in Portugal
The first case of smallpox in monkeys was reported by the Portuguese Directorate of Health.
The Xinhua news agency reported that the country had recorded 473 cases of smallpox in monkeys, all of them male.
“Monkey smallpox is common in wildlife such as rodents and primates, and humans can also be infected with the virus.”
The majority of cases are reported in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley regions, according to health authorities.
Cases of smallpox in monkeys
Symptoms include skin rash, fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, swollen lymph nodes, chills, and exhaustion.
The rash eventually forms a scab, which then peels off, indicating that the person is no longer contagious.
