Flood-hit Pakistan breaches largest freshwater lake to avert overflow

KARACHI: Authorities in Pakistan affected by floods inundated the country’s largest freshwater lake on Sunday, a minister said, displacing 100,000 people from their homes but saving areas. more densely populated from floodwaters.
Record monsoon rains and melting glaciers in the northern mountains of Pakistan have brought floods that have affected 33 million people and killed at least 1,290, including 453 children. Flooding, caused by climate change, is still widespread.
Lake Manchar, used to hold water, has reached dangerous levels and the increased pressure poses a threat to surrounding areas in the south of the country. Sindh province, Irrigation Minister Sindh Jam Khan Shoro speak.
He said around 100,000 people would be affected by the breach in five councils, but it would help save more residential clusters and also help reduce water levels in other, harder-hit areas.
“By causing a breach, we tried to save Sehwan town. The water level in Johi and Mehar towns in Dadu district will decrease due to this breach in the lake,” Mr Shoro told Reuters on Sunday.
It is unclear how many of the 100,000 people told to leave their homes will actually do so.
Besides historical rainfall, southern Pakistan is also facing increasing flooding as water rises from the Indus River.
The country received nearly three times its 30-year average in the quarter through August, totaling 390.7 millimeters (15.38 inches). Sindh province, with a population of 50 million, was hardest hit, receiving 464% more rain than the 30-year average.
Located in the lower Indus River, the southern regions of the country have seen river waters flowing from the north. Pakistan’s limited dams and reservoirs have overflowed and cannot be used to stop the flow downstream.
Tarbela dam in the northwest, has held capacity – 1,550 feet and 5.8 million acres – for weeks, according to NDMA data.
Downstream in Sindh, barges are under pressure with the Indus River with high flood levels, the NDMA said in its latest situation report.
