Georgia takes down NC State for sixth sweep of the season

FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas – The University of Georgia women’s volleyball team claimed victory over NC State Thursday afternoon in the Arkansas Challenge at Barnhill Arena in Fayetteville, Arkansas (25-21, 25-22, 25-21).

This is Georgia’s sixth of the season as the Bulldogs climb to 9-1 in 2022.

Junior Sophie Fischer leads Georgia’s attack with 12 kills against Wolfpack with a hit rate of 0.450. She also led Georgia’s effort by five blocks.

Senior Meghan Froemming received the highest 11 kills of the season, reaching 0.667 in the match. Freshman Estelle Haugen had her best 9 kills of the season.

Year two, libero Bailey Cox recorded 12 diggings for the Dog.

The first set begins the neck and neck when the set is tied five times. Leading at 12, Georgia used five consecutive points to take a 17-12 lead, draining both Wolfpack’s timeouts in the opening set. NC State struck back to take the lead down to one, 17-16, but Georgia never gave up its lead and continued to lead the opening stanza 25-21. Haugen and Fischer beat the Bulldogs with six and four kills, each contributing two blocks.

Georgia used a 6-0 lead in the second set to take an 8-2 lead. Wolfpack chipped in the lead to beat the set in 13th place. Tied back at 16, Georgia won four of the next five rallies to reclaim a three-point, 20-year lead. 17, but NC State responded with three straight points to take it back at 20, tying Georgia’s final timeout.

The Bulldogs took advantage of a few Wolfpack errors to aid the end of the 25-22 set and take a 2-0 lead in the match. NC State used Georgia’s irresistible mistake to take a 4-0 lead in the third inning. Georgia slowly took the lead, taking it to a two-point set, 14-12. Georgia was in a striking distance and used a 4-1 run to clear the deficit and take a 20-19 lead.

Georgia’s momentum saw the Bulldogs win five of the next seven wins en route to the comeback with a 25-21 win in the third set. Fischer had a total of six lives in the final set for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs return home to host Georgia Tech #7 at the Stegeman Coliseum on Saturday. The first serve between the Bulldogs and the Yellow Jackets is set for 7pm. Free admission. The first 500 fans will receive a red t-shirt and the first 250 UGA students will receive free food.
