The next big event for the Quick Finish Game, the Great Game Finish Quick in January, will be an online-only event after the organizers release a statement say “we don’t believe [Florida] is a safe place for our community” based on the government’s tough policies on Covid and marginalized individuals.
While the Summer Olympics event was completed quickly won again with a live event with a crowd in JulyAGDQ — whose last live version was in 2019 at the DoubleTree Hilton in Orlando — for 2023 “has signed a contract with a Florida venue,” a deal that has now been dropped due to a decision by the organizers .
Here is their full statement (emphasis mine):
AGDQ2023 is back online, online January 8 to January 15, 2023, benefiting the Cancer Prevention Foundation!
While we would like to return in person, we have determined that in order to provide a safe and welcoming event for all, it is best for us to move away from the original planned location. Ours is in Florida.
Due to the state’s continued disregard for the dangers of COVID-19 (including its anti-mandatory vaccination policy) and increased aggression against LGBTQ+ individuals, including legislation commonly referred to as ” Don’t say gay”, we don’t believe it’s a safe place for our community at this time.
Immediately following the success of AGDQ 2020, we contracted a location in Florida to return in 2021. Since the global pandemic was declared, we have postponed live events until safe back.
We have explored many options that allow us directly by moving to a more secure location. Unfortunately, the cost required to cancel our contract was too great to justify relocating AGDQ while paying the cancellation fee, and we were unable to delay our contract. again. This eventually led us to move AGDQ 2023 online.
While moving online will allow us to save some costs, we still have significant costs to restore. We’re working on getting that money back where possible, including through community support through a Twitch subscription. We thank the community for their support!
It’s a pity the move has cost them, but hopefully the 2024 event can find somewhere the team feels more comfortable calling home. Note that this does not affect the Quick Finish Summer Game, which as of 2018 has been held at the DoubleTree Hilton in Bloomington, Minnesota.
