KATY, Texas (KTRK) – The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said it was searching for a suspect in connection with a shooting that left three people injured Saturday night at a party attended mostly by teenagers.
Delegates answered the call around 11:30 p.m. at a short-term rental property on 21123 Bridgemeadows Street, HCSO said.
According to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, there were about 200 people at the gathering, which was revealed to be a party after going home to Paetow High School in the Katy Independent School District.
A neighbor in the area, Jim Shinabarger, said he heard a series of noises from the house behind and decided to call the police when he saw all the teenagers partying. While on the phone with dispatch, that’s when he said he heard gunfire.
“I noticed a few kids hovering over someone lying in the yard. So I called them over and said, ‘Look. You’d better send an ambulance. There’s someone downstairs,” Shinabarger said. “You could hear him screaming in the backyard when I went outside.”
Mason Rowe, who lives across the street, said he got out fast enough to see the chaos unfolding afterwards.
“I saw people getting through the fence and running. I saw people laying out in the backyard. It was kind of crazy,” he said. “Things like this keep happening and now that it’s close to home, I’m very upset with it. My mother is upstairs, disabled. The bullets could have hit her. I will lose his mind.”
Deputies initially reported that they found only two of the three shooting victims. They later discovered a third victim showed up at the hospital after leaving the scene before HCSO arrived.
Officials said all three victims, one 17-year-old and two 18-year-olds, were stable and had no life-threatening injuries.
According to the delegates, the party was promoted on social media, prompting teenagers from many schools to attend.
At some point, there was an altercation between the two groups and the shooting began, HCSO said. All of the victims were shot while trying to escape on foot.
At the scene, the front yard and back yard can be seen full of garbage such as red plastic cups, torn clothes with blood stains, beer cans. The fence in the backyard was damaged with holes in it, apparently caused by people trying to escape when gunshots rang out.
“This neighborhood right here has never had teenagers, violence, guns, nothing. So last night, this was a complete shock, and it makes you wonder. No neighborhood. “My mom’s getting old, so this is something she really doesn’t ‘don’t do,'” neighbor Lisa Harris said. “I feel for parents who, you know, wake up. wake up and get that phone call, you need to go to the emergency room. You don’t know if your child is alive or dead. That’s the sad part of it.”
The host, Bolade Abioye, told ABC13 he rented it to someone who initially found him on Airbnb before the listing was removed. They spoke privately, but he claimed to be unaware that the property would be used for a party. He said he was just glad no one was killed.
“I will not rent this house again,” Abioye said. “When I arrived this morning, I said, ‘God. I don’t know what to do.’ I asked: ‘Is there a dead person in the house?’ They (investigators) said, “No. No one dies.” Then I said, “Glory to God.”
Authorities said the suspect fled the scene and has yet to be located. The description of the suspect is unknown.
