The advancement of AI is not the same as the creation of human intelligence in machines

The term “artificial intelligence” actually has two meanings. AI refers to both the basic scientific task of building human intelligence into computers and the work of modeling large amounts of data. The two endeavors are very different, both in their ambitions and in the level of progress they have made in recent years.

Much of today’s rapid advancement is in data-centric AI, and we had an impressive list of people entering the field in this year’s MIT Technology Review. 35 Innovators Under 35 years old. Read more about their work and what it takes to help them succeed this essay by Oren Etzioni, Executive Director of the Allen Institute for AI.

This essay is part of the MIT Technology Review’s 2022 Innovators under 35 years old The package recognizes the most promising young people working in today’s technology sector. See the full list here.
