India’s First National Registry of Multiple Sclerosis


A National Registry of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) – Multiple Sclerosis Research and Registration Network in India and Allied Research and Registry Network (IMSRN) – has been established by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on June 11, 2022 and it is the first agency in the nation to research a dedicated database on MS and allied demyelinating disorders. Balram Bhargava, ICMR Director General, said: “There is a need for insight into our patient profile and outcomes as well as research planning in the areas of pathophysiology, etiology, management, and pathophysiology. management and rehabilitation for these disorders”.

Using new therapies for multiple sclerosis

Balram Bhargava has said that there are new, approved drugs called ‘disease-modifying therapies’ that are considered effective, among them, autologous hematopoietic bone marrow transplantation as a treatment advancement. MS in select cases.

The registry will create an organized system for collecting, storing, retrieving, analyzing, managing and resulting data. IMSRN was started in October 2021, with AIIMS Delhi as the national coordination center and 24 participating centers spread across the country.

Speaking about the process, RS Dhaliwal, head of non-communicable diseases, ICMR added that as of now, more than 1,000 patients have been recruited to this registry.

The registry will pave the way for bringing together experts to generate ideas and research proposals that focus on the pathophysiology, etiology and imaging of the disease, he stressed.
