Israeli police kill Palestinian in east Jerusalem raid

JERUSALEM: Israeli police shot and killed a Palestinian man on Monday, claiming he tried to stab officers during a raid in the east Jerusalem.
Police said officers were conducting a search for illegal weapons in the Kafr Aqab area, east of Jerusalem. When officers approached the house, the man, armed with a knife, tried to stab them, police allege. Police said they opened fire on the suspect and he later died.
The man’s father, Ibrahim al-Shaham, told journalists that the army banged on the door of their house at 3:30 a.m. and then used explosives to blow up the door of the house. Al-Shaham said police fired three bullets, one hitting his son, Mohammed, 21, in the head. Al-Shaham said his son was left with blood stains on the floor when police searched the apartment.
He denied his son intended to stab the officers and said police did not find a weapon in the house.
Human rights groups have accused Israeli security forces of regularly using excessive force against Palestinians without investigation or accountability.
The incident came a day after a Palestinian gunman opened fire on a bus outside Jerusalem’s Old City, injuring eight people, including US citizens.
America Foreign Office Condemned the attack in Jerusalem late on Sunday, and said at least five of the victims were US citizens. “We remain in close contact with our Israeli partners and stand with them in the face of this attack,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said.
Violence in Jerusalem follows a tense week between Israeli and Palestinians in Gaza and the West Coast.
