LONDON: Leaking information founder Julian Assange tested positive for Covidhis wife said Monday, as she battles his extradition to the United States.
“Julian didn’t feel well last week but started feeling sick on Friday,” Stella Assange was quoted saying by Press Association Press Agency.
“He started coughing and had a fever. He was given some paracetamol. He tested positive for Covid on Saturday.”
Thousands of people have formed a human chain around the UK parliament in London on Saturday to demand the release of Assange from Belmarsh prison in London.
The Australian national, now 51, has been held in a high-security prison since 2019, after skipping bail in a previous case.
When the pandemic broke out in early 2020, he failed to get bail because he risked going to jail with Covid.
His lawyers said at the time he had a history of medical conditions, including respiratory infections.
Stella Assange who is married Assange in Belmarsh in March and a mother of their two young sons, said she was worried about his health.
“The next few days will be crucial for his general health. He is currently locked in a cell 24 hours a day,” she added.
Assange skipped bail in 2010 due to Swedes trying to extradite him in connection with a sexual assault case and was hiding in the Ecuadorian embassy.
The case was dropped in 2019 and he lost his asylum status after a change of government in Quito, which resulted in his arrest and incarceration.
In August, Assange’s lawyers launched a case against the CIA for allegedly eavesdropping on private conversations with him at the mission.
He is appealing against the UK’s approval to extradite him to stand trial for leaking US military secrets about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
