Kenya’s deputy president William Ruto declared election winner
NAIROBI: KenyaThe Chairman of the Election Commission declared the Vice-Chairman William Ruto the winner of the presidential election is five times closer than the candidate Raila Odinga, a victory for the man who sent shockwaves through politics by appealing to Kenyans struggling economically rather than on traditional ethnic issues. But chaos arose shortly before the announcement when the vice chairman of the election commission and three other commissioners told journalists they could not support the “unequivocal nature” of the final phase. “We cannot own the results that will be published,” vice president Juliana Cherera speak. At the place of declaration, the police stepped up to calm down while shouting.
The sudden split in the committee came minutes after Odinga’s chief representative said it could not verify the results and made an allegation of “electoral violation” without providing details or evidence. Odinga did not arrive at the venue to make a statement.
Now, the people of Kenya are waiting to see if Odinga will again go to court to dispute the results of Tuesday’s peaceful election in a country crucial to regional stability.
