‘Los Espookys’ Is Still the Weirdest Show on HBO

TV may be filled with spoiled rich kids, but in Los Espookys, Saturday night live Writer Julio Torres Play twerp one to rule them all. Has Chuck Bass ever successfully requested the “round” moon so he could restore a lost earring? Because Andrés, a Torres silk pajama enthusiast.

By the way, the earring serves as a reminder of his totem to deny any and all accountability for his actions.

After a long hiatus, the majority of HBO interesting bizarre comedy returns Friday for a six-episode second season. The film is about a group of horror-loving friends who brand themselves as “Los Espookys” and set up a production company. The company’s gigs this season include: staging a fake Shakira to save a bad sculptor; entails the resurrection of a convincing group of ghosts in a graveyard; and help a politician win election by any means necessary. (You might call them “odd jobs.”)

Los Espookys premieres the first season in 2019, but fans will find the wait well worth it; these new episodes prove that creators Torres, Ana Fabrega and Fred Armisenof the text has become more concentrated. Also improved? The team’s likelihood of finding the last twist that the joke took is one step ahead of the group’s expected punch line. In one scene, we watch a character talking through a movie on his phone while moviegoers are watching; In the end, he hangs his friends in shock when Mufasa dies. He is watching Lion King in theaters — for the first time in his life.

Unusual Sensors Los Espookys farthest apart. All of these characters seem like a trifle – from the witty Andrés, to the warm goofy Renaldo (Bernardo Velasco), to the cynical Úrsula (Cassandra Ciangherotti).

Fabrega regularly steals the show as Tati, an eccentric kid whose self-awareness is low to allow her to declare her cooking prowess to a friend while pouring several bottles of ketchup into a bowl to make “gazpacho” dish. (If that grotesque image reminds you of early-pandemic “messy food” videos, you’re not too far off.) Yet hidden in all of these characters’ strangeness. is an intense desire to connect. Whether it’s Úrsula’s devotion to influencing political change or Tati’s misguided attempts to write her own “version” of popular novels like Don QuixoteAll of these characters are looking for ways to end the pervasive sense of alienation.

This installment picks up some themes from the previous one while keeping our favorite horror producers busy with a steady stream of gigs. However, some psychedelic dreams and haunting real-life nightmares also appear. The parasitic water demon Andrés talked to last season has decided to polish his resume and take an unpaid internship, leaving our favorite rightful man to confide in. others, like the divorce that left him in financial distress for the first time. life. Úrsula is on a mission to prevent a re-election of a bad president, and Renaldo is trying to figure out her gender while also being haunted by a murdered pageant queen. You know, just your normal, everyday problems.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Los Espookys, however, is the degree of bizarreness that comedy can bring into the existence of the characters in the film. In addition to Andrés’ connection to otherworldly figures and celestial bodies, Tati was able to piece together her celebrated writings into a successful (if short-lived) writing career. , while Úrsula lived up to a long-standing reputation for mythical integrity. (In a joke that amused Spanish speakers, it turns out we have a baby – Úrsula to thank for remove “LL” as a formal letter from the alphabet.)

With his signature funny voice and unforgettable visuals, Los Espookys exactly the genre one hopes to see more of in a content-rich streaming environment. Alas, it’s also exactly the kind of movie that looks risky as a newly merged Discovery series by Warner Bros. rotated dubbed series, particularly left and right, in an effort to serve “middle America”. Then again, maybe challenge it’s just another prop monster for this group to defeat.
