Love and Thunder’ Box Office Eyes $135 million – $145 million opening – The Hollywood Reporter
The hammer is back in action.
Marvel’s newest superhero product, Thor: Love and Thunderkick off the North American box office run with Friday’s gross of $69.5 million, including $29.6 million in Thursday’s previews.
Most experts believe that Thor 4 will earn $140 million to $145 million for the weekend. Disney is being more cautious and says $135 million to $145 million. Either way, that’s ahead of .’s opening $122 million Thor: Ragnorak.
The film is also making a big splash overseas, where it kicked off midweek and earned $48.6 million through Friday from its first 42 markets.
Disney and Marvel movies are direct sequels to Thor: Ragnorak – both are directed by accomplished filmmaker Taika Waititi – and are the fourth entry in God of thunder independent franchise. It is also the 29th entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s empire of titles.
The film reunites Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman, while newcomers to the franchise include Christian Bale. The cast also includes Tessa Thompson, Jaimie Alexander, Waititi and Russell Crowe.
The superhero movie scored the third or second best opening of the pandemic era with $150 million or more domestically and possibly $300 million globally. Last December, Spider-Man: There’s no way home grossed $50 million in preview with a $260 million domestic start (in recent days, the Sony and Marvel photo has surpassed $1.9 billion globally). And earlier this year, Doctor Strange in Madness’ Multiverse kicked off with $36 million in preview en route to a domestic launch of $187.4 million.
Thor: Love and Thunder is expected to contribute to the summer box office boom.
As of July 4, 2022, domestic sales are estimated at $3.9 billion, according to Comscore. This is an increase of nearly 250% compared to 2021, but a decrease of 32% compared to 2019. Revenue from the summer to the end of July 4 was 1.96 billion USD, an increase of nearly 200% compared to the same period in 2021 and only 15% decrease compared to 2019.

Among other titles driving the protest, Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in Madness’s Multiversereleased in early May, surpassed $950 million worldwide, while June Jurassic World Dominion crossed $800 million globally during the 4th of July holiday weekend.
