Make sure you’re angry about Alabama for the right reasons
Alabama is the perfect villain for so many reasons, and I didn’t even mention it Brandon Miller’s Situation. College track and field fans are sure to find reasons to hate this Crimson Tide team, and if they can’t, they’ve created one. People are so sick of watching their team win that they get excited by the mere success of other sports under the same umbrella.
Ohio State creates a similar vibe. These schools are institutions that have prospered to such an extent that the public is conditioned to be skeptical of their activities. We view them like Big Pharma or Big Tech or any other industry that is considered negative if you put Big before it.
And ‘Bama is the Amazon of Big Academia. We like to believe that college success is tied to all that goes wrong with collegiate sport. “They’ve bought everything from Nick Saban to Bear Bryant, so why should the 2022-23 basketball team be the exception?” “The only reason Miller is on the team is because he’s paid.” (Never mind Miller’s dad playing football for Gene Stallings and meeting his mother while in Tuscaloosa.)
The Tide is tearing up the tourney. They are a single seed that has not been tested. Miller didn’t score in the first round but the team took 96 points and won by a score of 21. The outside perception was that Alabama was using the Force with Darkside’s power, and its influence expanded. many rounds.
There’s only one school that the SEC fanatics occasionally don’t support when playing out of convention, and that’s Alabama. The rest of the time, the rest of the country is venomous with their disdain for all things houndstooth. There’s a mob mentality involved that I’m not nuanced enough to properly communicate without triggering someone’s cancel alarm, so we’ll skip that part.

What I’m trying to achieve is it’s just a university, man. You may hate Tuscaloosa, but you don’t have to be someone who goes too far in his rage and poisons trees. Don’t let it consume you.
‘Bama is a great villain, one of the best in sports history; right up there with the Russians. However, I discovered that you can destroy yourself with anger just by thinking about how unfair life is. You don’t have to let it go, you just need to know how much it affects you.
I get through each day with essentially the same approach. I’m secure enough to know who’s lousy, educated enough not to waver, and numb enough not to be bothered by arguments. The key is to find the perfect combination of alcohol and THC to effectively shut down your brain for a few hours each night.
I can separate my feelings about Alabama from the uncertainty surrounding what happened to Miller. It sounds horrible, but I will never celebrate Tide winning this tournament, no matter what happens outside of court.
You should never feel pleased about the death of a young woman, but using it as an incentive to not like school is doing exactly that. If you want to hate this situation for what it says about the value of human life in America, or the impact of guns on public safety, or another worthwhile concern, fine.
A life is bigger than fandom mediocrity, and it’s important to remember that.
