Moscow says 55 servicemen from Ukraine prisoner swap now in Russia


MOSCOW: Russia said on Thursday that 55 servicemen were released in the biggest prisoner exchange with Kyiv since the start Moscowmilitary campaign of Ukraine currently in Russia.
All service members were brought to the territory of the Russian Federation by military transport aircraft and are in medical facilities of the Russian Defense Ministry.
It said released prisoners were “in danger to their lives” while in captivity.
“They are receiving the necessary psychological and medical support,” it added.
The statement does not mention Viktor Medvedchuka former Ukrainian congressman accused of treason and an ally of the President Vladimir Putinwho was also released in the swap.
After the exchange announced Wednesday, Ukraine received 215 people, including fighters who commanded the defense of Mariupol’s Azovstal steel plants that have become symbols of Ukrainian resistance.
Also in the statement, the Defense Ministry’s daily briefing, Moscow accused Kyiv of “provocative actions” at the meeting hosted by Russia. Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine “aimed at creating the threat of a man-made disaster”.
It said that in the past 24 hours, Ukraine had repeatedly shelled the nearby city of Energodar and the territory near the plant, Europe’s largest nuclear facility, adding that radiation levels were “normal”.
The plant has become a flashpoint because of concerns about nuclear incidents following tit-for-tat claims of attacks there.
