MS State opens conference game with victory over UGA

STARKVILLE – The Mississippi State volleyball team opened the SEC rankings with a four-set win over Georgia in Newell-Grissom Wednesday night.

Bang (8-3, 1-0 SEC) won the first set 25-14 before the Georgia Bulldogs (9-3, 0-1 SEC) responded back in the second set with a 25-20 win. MSU continued that with a 25-15 win in the third set and ended the match with a 25-15 win in the final set.

“Today’s theme is figuring out who we are,” said head coach Julie Darty Dennis. “I think it’s a great opportunity to start the SEC’s game by figuring out that identity and setting the tone on our home court. We’ve increased the serve pressure we talked about. about the whole week in reality. We had to serve harder and win the game serve so that we could actually be the Mississippi State team we wanted to be. I’m really proud of the exposure. our first, it was amazing. Overall, they seemed confident, relaxed and very happy.”

Bang’s offense was led by a 15-kill performance from Lauren Myrick, who also added eight digs during the night. Shania Cromartie threw the ball with a 13-kill attempt in the four-setter, along with six digs.

Gabby Waden scored 11 kills to herself at 0.455 hit, plus three extra blocks and four mines.

Sania Petties and Deja Robinson added five lives each during the night. MSU recorded 10.0 blocks, led by a five-block effort from Robinson. Myrick and Cromartie also contributed greatly to the victory.

Gabby Coulter had his sixth double of the year, recording 44 assists and 14 goals. Coulter also added the highest five kills of the season.

Lilly Gunter increases defense speed with 12 digs, and adds two aces.

As a team, Maroon and White scored 54 kills, 52 assists, and 51 digs. MSU held Georgia by 0.199 hit overnight.

“We have the best fans in the country and we definitely feel their energy,” Dennis said. “We needed their help after that second set. When we played at our best, it was fun. It was fun to watch them get through the game. I’m really proud of Dawgs. A great win. of Dawgs tonight. It was fun to start SEC play 1 -0.”

Mississippi to Auburn, Ala. On Wednesday, September 28 to take on the Auburn Tigers. The first serve is set at 7pm CT.
