The NBA could begin penalizing teams that block an opponent’s breakout by fouling during transitions, according to a Monday report from Yahoo Sports, citing league sources.
The league’s Competition Committee, which began meeting in Las Vegas last weekend, is working on a proposal to allow the team fouled in the match a free throw as well as possession. Previously, the team that was fouled would only continue to hold the ball out of bounds.
The so-called “foul” is coming under closer scrutiny because it allows teams to neutralize their opponents’ breakthrough opportunities, especially when the opponent has a numerical advantage.
This tactic also slows down the tempo of the game.
The committee’s recommendations, including another regarding the behavior of players on the bench, are expected to be approved when they are presented to the league’s Board of Governors, the committees said. source told Yahoo Sports.
One of the few bench decoration problems involved players having to stand for long periods of time instead of taking their seats during the match. Fans sitting behind the teams’ benches, often expensive chairs, have complained that their view of the game is obstructed.
According to the report, the committee is considering tougher penalties for players who fail to keep their seats.
The bench decoration violations resulted in a total of $175,000 fines against the Dallas Mavericks during last season’s playoffs.
