New Orleans Hard Rock Hotel collapses
Wednesday marks three years since a tragedy struck along Canal Street in New Orleans. The Hard Rock Hotel collapsed three years ago. The building was under construction when three workers died. The scene has been cleaned up, but there are many questions about what will happen to the space and what next for the victim’s family still waiting to be answered. Jose Arreola, Quinnyon Wimberly and Anthony Magrette were killed, and several others were injured. Nearby property was also damaged, and part of Canal Street was closed for more than a year. Last month, a judge sent a mediator to settle hundreds of people claiming damages from the collapse. Civil District Judge Kern Reese appointed John Perry Jr. do special expert to solve. He is negotiating with a committee of 13 plaintiffs’ attorneys and with hotel developers and contractors. The developers of the site, 1031 Canal, released the following statement: “Today, the owner of the 1031 Canal project, along with many others, pays tribute to those who were victims of a tragedy that occurred three years ago. After thorough investigative efforts, OSHA specifically did not involve the owners in any way, but instead invoked Heaslip Engineering and HUB Steel about their families. many structural failures related to beams, columns and connections. These experts are trusted to determine the means and methods for constructing the Building.”

“Today, the Channel 1031 project owner joins many others in remembering those who were victims of the tragedy that occurred three years ago, as well as their families. After thorough investigative efforts, OSHA specifically unrelated to the owner but instead, Heaslip Engineering and HUB Steel cited numerous structural failures related to beams, columns and connections.“
