If you’re going to buy a new Nvidia 40-series GPU this year, you may need to save more money than you intended. That’s because the GPU maker has confirmed its plans to “launch” the already planned and cheaper 12GB RTX 4080 model. Instead, for now, only the more expensive and faster 16GB RTX 4080 will launch next month.

A few weeks ago, after much rumor and speculation, Nvidia has finally announced its next series of high-end PC graphics cards. The plan then is to launch two different versions of the RTX 4080 GPU in November: the 16GB RTX 4080 ($1199) and the 12GB RTX 4080 ($899). It also announced $1600 4090 during that same event. These prices have gone as high as you might expect, with many deeming them too expensive. And now the “cheapest” of these new, expensive cards won’t even launch next month.

As announced today by Nvidia, the company is “launching” the RTX 4080 12GB. They claim this is because, while the card is “awesome,” it’s too “confusing” to have two different GPUs both designated as “RTX 4080.” This echoes Criticisms arise from many consumers after 40 recent announcements; many argue that the obviously lower specs of the 12GB RTX 4080 are the same as the “4070” or “4079” cards in theory.

Kotaku contacted Nvidia about the cancellation and future of the 12GB RTX 4080 model.

“So we’re hitting the ‘unlaunch’ button on the 4080 12GB,” Nvidia said in a short statement posted on the company’s official website. “The 16GB RTX 4080 is amazing and is on track to delight gamers everywhere on November 16th.”

Of course, it’s hard not to see this move as a way for Nvidia to push more of its customers — many of whom have been delaying buying new GPUs for several years now. while the card is still hard to buy—To spend more money on more expensive cards. And while early previews of the cheaper 12GB 4080 showed it to be significantly slower than the more expensive 16GB version, it’s still nice to have at least one option for under $1,000. But that’s gone now. What will happen remains to be seen, but perhaps Nvidia will actually rebrand the 12GB RTX 4080s to the 4070s.
