Officials say the woman was rescued after the car ended up in the attic of Zachary’s home

Zachary, La. (WAFB) – A woman was rescued and is currently being taken to hospital after her vehicle crashed through the roof of a home in Zachary on Friday, Nov. 11 Zachary Sheriff David McDavid indicates that the driver may have had a medical emergency prior to the collision.

First responders were called to the scene in the 2300 block of Rita Street around 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Brandon Lacoste, who lives in a nearby home, said he heard what sounded like an explosion. When he went to check, he found the car overturned and stuck on the roof.

“My grandmother thought it was a transformer. I ran out the door and saw a guy running from the park pointing towards the roof,” Lacoste said.

Lacoste told WAFB that the two children were at home at the time but escaped through the back door thanks to the quick wits of their eldest brother. He said that community members called the children’s parents and they rushed home to make sure the siblings weren’t injured.

“The kids are perfectly fine. Lacoste said they are extremely scared. “We are a great neighborhood. We usually come together when something like this happens. We’re good at getting out and making sure everyone’s okay and keeping everyone calm.

Neighbors poured out of their homes and watched firefighters work to stabilize the vehicle so they could tow the driver to safety. McDavid said both the car and the house were badly damaged. He said firefighters feared the house might collapse during the rescue. Other investigators worked to figure out exactly how the vehicle flew through the air.

“I’m not sure what happened, but they had to go at pretty good speed to get into the ditch, jump, hit a tree and end up on the roof,” Lacoste said. “I’ve been a first responder for four years and I’ve never seen anything like this.”

Lacoste was not sure if the woman lived in the vicinity, but said he recognized the vehicle.
