Police said the group broke into a 27-year-old pregnant woman in a hole in Ho Xuan Park on Wednesday afternoon. They say one of the teenagers shot a man in a private vehicle as they were driving away.

“They told me ‘give me your money. I know you have money, give me yours.” And like you said, they’re just kids so I’m like this is a joke, what is this? ‘ Perla said.

But that’s no joke. Perla says four car robbers took her keys and found a place to rest. Police say they opened fire on another vehicle, attacking the 32-year-old driver.

“I started crying. I was at the park with my dog, I just took him out because he wasn’t feeling well. I just wanted to go for a walk with him,” Perla said.

Omaha police eventually recovered Perla’s car in North Omaha along with another vehicle the suspects used in the robbery. “We always try to encourage people to look up when they are walking to and from a vehicle or business,” said Chris Gordon, a spokesman for Omaha police.

It’s also important to think like a witness: look for prominent features on the suspect and report the carjacking to the police immediately.

“If you go out with your head held high, look around, make contact with people, make eye contact, that tends to reduce you as a perceived victim,” says Gordon.

For Perla, the incident left her traumatized, but that’s okay. She’s looking forward to doing this behind her back and becoming a mother.

“She’s my first child so I don’t want anything to happen to her,” Perla said.

Police also say it’s best to park in visible areas, try to travel in pairs when possible, and have your car keys ready to lock and unlock quickly.
