Preview cards for Disney Lorcana, Mouse’s answer to Magic, Pokémon

The first cards for Disney Lorcana, Ravensburger’s ambitious new trading card game, arrived at the D23 convention in Anaheim, California today. These include seven characters from Disney’s nearly 100-year history of pop-culture domination – as well as a card of Mickey Mouse himself exclusive to the convention.

We also now know the official name of the first set of cards, due out in the fall of 2023: Disney Lorecana: The First Chapter. The designers told Polygon that players will take on the role of lighters, bringing to life classic Disney characters for table combat. Each of the seven launch cards includes the character’s name, the cost to cast, and stats on both offensive and defensive behavior. Additionally, each card also includes a special power or mechanic, as well as a bit of italic flavor text drawn from Disney lore. A mysterious symbol at the bottom right of each card seems to indicate its relative strength or value. Its usage will be made clear once the rules of the game are known.

Disney Lorcana is a bold move by Ravensburger, a 139-year-old game publisher whose first game, A trip around the worldwas published in 1884. The company is perhaps best known for its Disney VillainsA family friendly strategy board game developed by Prospero Hall (now part of Funko Games). It includes nearly 30 villains from all Disney, Marvel and Star Wars The universe.

Ravensburger North America CEO and global head of gaming Filip Francke spoke about the overall implications of the partnership with the Mouse House.

“Here [game] perhaps the greatest potential Ravensburger has ever pursued,” said Francke, “and therefore perhaps also the largest investment we have ever made in any kind of project and initiative.”

Francke continued: “We know that when you enter the TCG market, you are inviting players on a journey that spans many years. “We do not take that lightly. This effort is a series of years [of releases]. That’s something Disney never really allowed any of you [collaborator] do. So the trust we built with Disney […] I think that has allowed us to get to a point where both strategically and commercially there is confidence to say, “Yes, let’s dare to do this together.”

The first seven cards feature Cruella De Vil, Elsa, Captain Hook, Maleficent in dragon form, Robin Hood, and Stitch.

A collector’s card – available only to D23 members attending this year’s convention – features Mickey Mouse, dressed in the costume of the Brave Little Tailor, harking back to the classic animated short that premiered last year. 1938.

The artists involved in creating the mainstream art for these cards represent Ravensburger heavyweight illustrative talent are calling for support for this line. These include Simangaliso Sibaya, Nicholas Kole, Luis Huerta, John Lorenand Marcel Berg.

The developers told Polygon that the characters and abilities in this special Expo Collection D23 will also appear in Disney Lorecana: The First Chapter. The Expo Collection D23 The card will have a unique foil handling. They will also be marked with D23 Expo and 1st Version symbol. The set will be on sale during the congress for $49.95. Only those present at the conference can receive the Mickey Mouse card, which is not included in the card Expo Collection D23.
