Read the Prince of Wales’ full statement below:

“On Thursday, the world lost an extraordinary leader whose absolute commitment to his country, Kingdom and Commonwealth. Much will be said in the coming days about the significance of her historic reign.

However, I have lost a grandmother. And while I will grieve her loss, I also feel incredibly grateful. I have benefited from the Queen’s wisdom and assurance in my fifth decade. My wife has had twenty years of guiding and supporting her. My three kids have had to spend vacations with her and create memories that will last for the rest of their lives.

She was by my side when I was happiest. And she was by my side during the saddest days of my life. I know this day will come, but there will come a time when the reality of life without Grannie really feels real.

I thank her for the kindness she has shown my family and me. And I thank her on behalf of my generation for providing an example of service and dignity in public life that is in a different era, yet relevant to all of us.

My grandmother famously said that grief is the price we pay for love. All the sadness we will feel in the coming weeks will be testament to the love we have for our extraordinary Queen. I will honor her memory by supporting my father, the King, in any way I can. “
