MANILA, Philippines — A malfunctioning air-conditioning system didn’t stop Creamline from dominating Petro Gazz and claiming its first win in the 2022 Premier League Volleyball Championship Semifinals on Thursday at Philsports Arena.

The game continued despite the heat and Creamline managed to stay calm in the first set, breaking the 15-15 deadlock by scoring six points in a row before Alyssa Valdez shot in to lead the set 1-0.

The air conditioning was finally fixed in the second set and the Cool Smashers maintained their form en route to a 25-21, 25-20, 25-23 victory over the Angels. This was Creamline’s first consecutive win in the convention.

Valdez, who had 11 points, including two saves and 15 hits, said they were used to the steamy training conditions.

“In reality, we train without conditioning. I think we really have to turn our point of view into something positive. We are doing this in every game,” Valdez said. “It was also to our advantage because we really sweated the game. Our bodies warm up and it works for us too.”

“We’re really grateful that everyone was focused and didn’t think about the little distractions,” she added.

Jema Galanza, who also shines with 14 points thanks to 12 strikes and two aces, is of the same opinion.

“The good thing is that we can adjust immediately because it’s hard to play when the venue is hot. It’s more tiring. But we realized we weren’t the only ones playing, Petro Gazz went through it too,” said Galanza, who was sweating even during the post-match press conference.

“The heat also keeps us warm. But no matter the temperature, we will keep fighting and play well,” added Galanza, who also had eight digs.

Despite winning the first of their three semi-finals, Valdez stressed that the Cool Smashers couldn’t let their guard down when they faced Cignal, who also beat Chery Tiggo earlier, on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum .

Creamline is also set to battle the Mylene Paat-led Crossovers on Tuesday at Ultra, aiming to reach the Finals to secure their Grand Slam spot.

“All the teams are equal in the semi-finals so we need to stay focused. We really enjoyed the game today and we learned a lot. Hopefully we can bring this confidence back as this is our first three-set win at the Games. We need to achieve a lot more in these few semi-finals,” said PVL’s three-time MVP.

Galanza also has no plans to give up as she remains determined to attend their Friday morning workout.
