Rams reveals more about Matthew Stafford’s injury

Matthew Stafford’s injury situation is rapidly taking a turn for the worse.

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay revealed after Sunday’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks that Stafford suffered a spinal cord injury. The veteran midfielder was placed on the injury reserve earlier this week, and now there are signs that Stafford’s injury has ended the season. according to Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic.

Stafford initially suffered a concussion in Week 9 against Tampa Bay, missed a game, and then returned to concussion treatment after receiving a helmet-to-helmet impact at Week 11 before New Orleans (video is here). He eventually cleared the protocol again but is also said to be facing neck fatigue.

With Sunday’s revelation that Stafford is undergoing treatment for a spinal injury, it’s clear there are concerns not just for the season but for the rest of his career. Stafford turns 35 in February and is in his 14th NFL season. While he has a contract until at least 2025 (the Rams are likely to expire in 2026), the risk may no longer be worth it for Stafford, especially since he’s already won the Super. Career first bowl with the Rams last season.
