Shooting at Marietta, Georgia, Walmart

At least one person was injured Wednesday in a take a shot outside a Walmart near Marietta, an Atlanta suburb, Cobb County Police said.

Police in a tweet initially reported several injuries, but Deputy Sheriff Ben Cohen later said at least one person was shot and taken in a private vehicle to a hospital five miles away. This person’s condition is not known.

Police responded to reports of an active shooter and later identified the shooting as “between two separate groups…at the exterior of the Walmart Auto Center,” Cohen said.

“It’s two groups that know each other,” said the deputy sheriff. “They had a fight… No danger to the public.”

Some have been detained for questioning, Cohen said. Police said the 203,000-square-foot Walmart was evacuated but no shots were fired inside. The car center is located at the back right of the store, behind the garden center, and has its own small car park.

Gail Parks customer says CNN affiliate WSB, “This guy started running around the store shouting ‘Active shooting! ‘Active shooting!’ And people started running all over the place, dropping things and running out of the store.”

Walmart spokeswoman Ashley Nolan said the company is working closely with police.

The shooting happened two weeks later six store employees were killed by a gunman at a Walmart in Virginia.

A night shift manager at a Walmart in Chesapeake allegedly opened fire with a shotgun on November 22 in a break room during the third mass shooting in Virginia in November.

Walmart spokesman Charles Crowson said the Chesapeake store will be closed “for the foreseeable future” and will be remodeled before reopening.

Cobb County is home to about 767,000 people, according to the United States Census Bureau.
