Simpsons Hit and Run remake in Unreal 5 puts a hit classic in an open world

A fan who remade the hit classic from 2003 The Simpsons: Hit & Run in Unreal Engine 5, which adds some huge details relevant to 2022 – like open world maps, better vehicles and online multiplayer.

Originally reported by Eurogamermore than a million viewers have watched the 17 minute video on YouTube of the impressive project. It opens with a disclaimer noting that the project is “for entertainment purposes” and will “never be available for download” – so you won’t be able to play it, but that’s not make watching videos less appealing.

Reuben Ward goes on to detail the pure changes and effort put into this remake – from importing map pieces to creating an open world and adding foliage and lighting effects to make the image stand out. He used Unreal Engine 5, a dialogue engine of his own design called “Dialogue and Narrative Editor”, along with Blender.

Much of the fun of watching a video is seeing how small specific tweaks make a world of difference in modernizing the look and feel of the game. Ward describes how creating specific window shadows makes everything from neighborhood houses to skyscrapers look much better. “As long as you do a little bit of work, you can get a great result,” Ward says in the video.

This project comes eight months after Ward started going viral for “redoing” the hit classic game in a week. The 19-year-old game’s lead designer, Joe McGinn, even commented on that original project. “It’s amazing what you’ve accomplished!” he say. “Really gives a taste of what a complete modern remaster can be.”
