Soulframe is the next game from Warframe developer Digital Extremes, and this new project inspired by Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke will become a “mirror universe version of Warframe” set in a fantasy world.
According to the report of washington articles, Soulframe was announced during TennoCon 2022 and is being led by Steve Sinclair, director of Warframe, who stepped down from his current role to help bring this new adventure to life.
Soulframe is a free open-world adventure “heavily influenced by themes of nature, restoration, and discovery” alongside works like Princess Mononoke and The NeverEnding Story. These inspirations will help the team build a world that is “a collision between industry and nature. In service of that, the world will prove displeased to the players who occupy it.”
“Pomposity [in ‘Soulframe’] it’s that the world itself is getting a little angry about what it’s done with it, and the reasons underneath tend to change throughout the day,” said creative director Geoff Crookes. “So there will be proceduralism in the networks of caves and openings and so forth beneath the world.”
The game is still very early in development, but Sinclair notes that it will share Warframe’s focus on cooperative player-to-player combat and procedurally generated environments. Furthermore, Soulframe will be a “strange fit for fantasy” and will be different from Warframe’s “spin-mech in the flesh”.
The difference doesn’t stop there either.
“Where ‘Warframe’ focuses on shooting, this one focuses on melee combat,” Sinclair said. a lot of similarities with the genre that we have experience with. “

Soulframe looks to have a very open-centric world, similar to Warframe’s newer open-world planets, but it will focus more on exploration than its predecessor. The team also wanted to make it “feel more alive to the player on a moment-by-moment basis.”
With the game being called Soulframe, it looks like Digital Extremes is also taking inspiration from FromSoftware’s Dark Souls or Elden Ring. However, that was not the plan they originally outlined.
“I think it certainly wasn’t the inspiration for the original ideas or what we wanted to do,” Sinclair said. Ring’ is purely a subject of some conversation – possibly camera-related, possibly related to their stellar combat speed. [‘Elden Ring’] Absolutely amazing. “
The “basic concepts” for Soulframe started floating around the studio in 2019, and a very small team consisting mainly of artists were the only ones working until this February. So why did Digital Extremes decide to announce the game now?
“Our work is very community driven,” says Sinclair. “It would be troublesome not to tell [players] about the changes and who is leading ‘Warframe’. Actually it’s too early to announce ‘Soulframe’! But in terms of transparency and making sure they understand how we think, we tend to be a lot more open… than most studios. “
Sinclair and Crookes also said they don’t plan to stay silent for years as some games announced too soon tend to work, instead they plan for fans to “look behind the curtain” ” as soon as possible. Furthermore, “Digital fuckers will get to play a version of ‘Soulframe’ for a year.”
“What we wanted to try to do is similar to ‘Warframe,’ which is, ‘Hey, watch us make the game and get your hands on the rough parts and let us know how you feel,’” Sinclair said.
