Madden NFL 23 and Saints Row were the two best-selling games in the US in August, which is no surprise given that they both launched last month. But the third best-selling game is the one you might not expect right away, since it’s four years old: Marvel’s Spider-Man.
Spider-Man did a great job in August because it finally got a PC release via Steam on the 12th. It’s a remastered version, which includes all previous DLC, and because it’s the first. it was released on something other than Sony hardware, which proved an appeal to many (and continuing to release more Steam Decks probably doesn’t affect either) . It was enough to push Spider-Man from 84th on the NPD in July to 3rd in August, above both Elden Ring and MultiVersus.
According to NPD analyst Mat Piscatella, Spider-Man is also the best-selling game of the month across all titles tracked on Steam, and is a major reason why the PC content segment of the entire market has grown over the past few years. Every year. This may also lead gamers to hope Sony can deliver more PC-exclusive features at some point in the future:
“The Sony PC ports worked fine,” says Piscatella. Looking back at some recent history, God of War jumped from #146 on the December 2021 charts to #5 in January 2022 with the launch of the PC version, while Days Gone also had a big break with the PC release, climbing to #20 on the May 2021 charts after placing at number 247. in April of that year PC has been a great platform for Sony not only in terms of performance. sales of PC releases, but also on how these releases have had a positive impact on related attributes. Wins all, really.”
Also in software, Madden 23’s No.1 position is the 23rd year in a row that a Madden game topped the month of release. Soul Hackers 2, another new title, debuted at #10 on the PlayStation chart and #15 overall. We’ve also seen Horizon II: Forbidden West rank 12th by sales – it’s the fourth best-selling game of 2022 so far, behind Pokemon Legends: Arceus at #3, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is at #2, and (yes, you guessed it) Elden Ring is at #1.

In terms of hardware, the PS5 was August’s best-selling console in both unit and dollar sales, and the best-selling console of the year so far in dollar sales. The Switch still leads in sales for the year, although the PS5 may have a chance to catch up before the end of the year as hardware availability is improving dramatically.
Total spending on games fell 5% year over year to $4.1 billion, but this is slightly higher than the $4.07 total from August 2020, indicating that Consumer spending on gaming has returned to overall levels during the lockdown.
